As a young girl she assisted in her father's shop. Later she trained as a spool-winder in a jute mill. Her mother died when she was only 13; her father was an alcoholic. She blamed this lack of parental guidance for marrying an unsuitable husband.

They were married 27th July 1908 at St. Patrick's RC church, Dundee. They lived at 18 Craigie Street (1915, 1927) and later at 10 Craigie Street (1940). The children were all christened in the Catholic church but were brought up as Protestants since their father was not a regular church-goer.

James served in the First World War in France. He worked as a golf-club maker and lost the sight of one eye when hit in the face with a golf club. Became a chimney-sweep's assistant, and later a sawyer with Melville Dunn & Co. Also worked as a doorman in the Royal cinema in Arthurstone Terrace. He spent all his money on drink and was frequently drunk, but was a hard worker and always turned up for work on time despite having a hangover.

Annie was very prim and proper in contrast to her husband's way of life. She died at Maryfield Hospital 30th March 1954, aged 67. James then went to live with his daughter, Millie, at 14 Grange Road, Monifieth, where he died of lung cancer four months later on 5th August, aged 70. Their children were:
